1964

On the edge of the world-famous Claddagh basin in Galway breathtaking stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way, Monroes is a must see for anyone visiting the West of Ireland. Monroes has been a cornerstone in the Westend of Galway City since 1964. Originally, the โ€˜New Manhattan Barโ€™, John and Margaret Monroe returned from New York City to open the bar to great excitement as the first Galway bar to have table service, a โ€˜Ladies Loungeโ€™ and a โ€˜Singing Loungeโ€™. The venue remains family owned and operated and has always been a ground-breaking venue for live music. It played host to the top Irish showbands in the 60โ€™s and 70โ€™s and has grown to become a leading Irish venue for national and international Irish musicians.

1979

In 1979, whilst still adjoined to the main family home and stables, it changed itโ€™s name to Monroes Tavern. Inside, find the original space with beautiful wooden interior and a cosy Irish snug. A warm family welcome is at the heart of Monroes service and live music continues to entertain locals and tourists 7 nights a week. Following 2 fires and many renovations, Monroes Live venue was added in 2009 to meet the demand for top international and home grown music acts in Galway. Texas, Kodaline, The Darkness, Paddy Casey, The Academic, Sharon Shannon, Mary Coughlan, Aslan, De Dannan, Lughnasa, Matt Molloy are among the many artists who have taken to the stage.
