Dark Room Orchestra is a new project based in Berlin and curated by bassist and composer Daire MacMághnuis. The project seeks to further break the barriers between musical worlds. In particular modern ‘Pop’ music and the powerhouse of orchestra 'classical’ music has remained estranged from each other for most of their existence. With the belief that there is no real reason for this estrangement Daire writes for Dark Room Orchestra freely pulling from as many influences as he pleases.

The concept was born from two aspects: Firstly, Daire’s experience performing classical music, and deep love of the subtle intimacy and ensemble achieved between performers of live acoustic music. And secondly, a respect and admiration to the skill involved in popular songwriting and its ability to connect millions of people. Daire derives a lot of influence from artists such as Radiohead and Jeff Buckley, Punch Brothers, Bach, Ravel and Andy Schauf.

Dark Room Orchestra is a four piece band. Composed of Double Bass, Violin, Acoustic guitar and drum kit and four voices. Born from its curators experience performing classical music, all of the arrangements are designed for an unplugged setting. The music features both hard hitting hooks to get lost in as well as tightly knit classical style instrumental and vocal arrangements that will break your heart.

Throughout summer 2022 Dark Room Orchestra will tour a programmatic work through Ireland, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. The piece follows a man through the timeline of a night and depicts his humanity, his fears, his desires and his search for a better version of himself.
